The Pax Romana (Roman Peace)

Under August the Romans develop their government and implement local corporations in the cities. (Menapiers, Nerviers, Tungi, Treviers). They introduce the land registry, roads and taxes. One may say that the integration of the Gallics carries into effect under Emperor Claudius.

It seems that the network of roads formed the bases of the organisation of the Roman government. First the Roman trails or roads formed the liaison between the garrisons and later they became the links between the settlements. It may very well be possible that the exploitation of the rural sites was influenced by these roads or river connections, as the big Gallic Roman rural communities along the trail from Bavai to Dinant seem to indicate. The Romans hardly had interest for the Famenne because of the underground oil bearing slate. In the Calestien on the other hand, where there's a lot of lappet, the occupants did settle.
