The gardens

The vegetable garden, laid-out according Gallic Roman example, is divided in strips so it is easy to upkeep. Didactical information boards are present.

The greens are classified according their employment at the time of the Gallic Romans: leafy vegetables, root-likes, fruit, etc.

The greens are appreciated in Gallic Roman dishes and products of the region.

Next to the kitchen garden, which was composed with regional varieties, another garden with useful plants is found. These plants are grouped according their usages: for basket weaving, with medical properties, to be used in the kitchen, for roping, for dyeing wool and fabrics, aromas. Two hundred sorts of plants are cultivated.

Every year the seams of the various species are collected, sorted, cleaned, put into bags and divided among the different scientific partners.

In the field of the vegetable garden a number of issues were experienced: the interaction between the various greens, influence of the moon, experiments in the light of combatting diseases and bacteria by means of natural processes, estimated usage value of compost and natural manuring.

Two tree yards with local and regional fruit varieties with long stalks, as were cultivated during ancient times, are laid-out on Malagne. One of these yards with small fruits was created on the base of wild indigenous species (rose-hip, male cornelberry, barberry, black elderberry, guelders' rose, etc.) and on the base of cultivated local varieties of the raspberry, blackberry, quince pear, currant, crossberry and the bramble bush.

From experiences in the field of growth and preservation of these bushes and trees we recommend people to plant ancient sorts of fruit trees. At dedicated times demonstrations are organised to explain about the keep-up of a tree yard or a vegetable garden.
