Exploiting the soil

The Gallic Romans used loam and clay as construction material or to fabricate pots.

At Malagne following purposes of clay are shown: pottery wheel, bread ovens and a cabin of loam and straw are made after Gallic Roman model.

For the fabrication of ceramics the Gaulish used different kinds of techniques, such as working with moulds, with clay strips and slow hand turning technique. Under the influence of the Romans the turning wheel becomes more popular and the pots become higher and smaller, but also more equal and the walls thinner. The Gallic Romans that lived on Malagne used rustic earthenware, made at the spot, but also imported crockery with a specific red finish that was more expensive.
